THE MUFFIN PROJECT

If you give a moose a muffin, he’ll want some jam to go with it.”*

If you give a third-grader a book, will he read it?

We think so.

And that can make all the difference.

Experts say that, by the end of third grade, most students have developed the reading habits they will have for the rest of their lives. Wouldn't it be great to get students excited about reading—before they finish third grade?

The first round of M.C. Tillson’s Muffin Project was a terrific success! Through the generosity of people like you, we gave away more than 1,000 books to third graders in Flint, Michigan, in North Carolina's Brunswick County, and in Northern California.

Now we're at it again.

When author M.C. Tillson schedules school visits for the 2024-2025 school year, she will be targeting areas where book ownership is not a given. She’ll be encouraging young readers to join Sam and Becky as they assist shipwrecked ghosts on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in The Clue at Copper Harbor, search for pirate treasure on North Carolina’s Cape Fear Coast in The Mystery at Oak Island, and hunt for clues in the Mystery Word contest in the San Francisco Bay Area in The Clue at Fort Point. The plan is to make a big impression on young readers by giving them the first book in a trilogy and introducing them to the person who wrote it.

And you never know—this could start a habit of lifetime reading. Because when a third grader finishes that book, she might want another...and another.
